September is the real new year for businesses. You come back, you re-plan, you start selling again. And like every restart, it is the moment when everything left behind in June resurfaces. The website is almost always one of those things.
Not because it is broken. Because it has been running on its own for two months while nobody was watching: the summer promo still on the homepage, the form that quietly stopped sending emails, the heavy photos that slowed it down. Small things that, added up, decide whether someone searching for you in September finds you ready or finds you stalled.
Here are the seven checks to run when you get back, in order of how much they matter.
1. Loading speed
A slow site loses people before it is even read. Over the summer heavy images, forgotten plugins and skipped updates pile up, and the bill is paid in visitors who leave. Check the loading times from your phone on mobile data, not just from the office computer wired to fibre: that is where your clients actually are.
2. Content and prices up to date
Opening hours, price lists, promotions, notices. The expired summer promo still on the homepage and the “closed for holidays” banner left online tell a client one thing: nobody looks after this site. It is the fastest way to lose trust before you have even spoken. Half an hour spent bringing the content back in line is worth more than many things that feel more urgent.
3. The contact forms, actually tested
A form that looks like it works and a form that delivers the email are two different things. Fill in a test request yourself and check that it arrives, that it does not land in spam, and that the right person receives it. A silent form is a client lost without you ever knowing, and it is the most expensive and most common mistake at the restart.
4. The mobile experience
Today much of the searching and browsing happens on smartphones, and that is often where a client forms a first impression of a business. Open the site on your phone and retrace a real client’s path: finding the number, sending a message, understanding what you offer in a few seconds. If a button is too small or a menu will not open properly, it is better to notice it now than well into September.
5. Measurement is switched on
Without tracking you cannot tell whether the site is working: how many people arrive, from where, how many actually contact you. It is the first thing missing from sites built in a hurry, and the one that in December separates knowing what worked from guessing. If you want to see how much it really matters, we cover it in how much a website costs.
6. Security and backups
Updates installed, a valid security certificate, a recent backup. It is not the part you see, it is the part that saves your day when something goes wrong. When you get back it is worth the half hour it takes to put it in order, before it turns into an emergency at the worst possible moment.
7. The site collects leads while you restart
The last point is the most important. A stalled site waits for someone to look at it. A working site takes the request, records it, replies automatically and puts it in front of the right person, even in the evening and at the weekend. It is the difference between restarting by pushing on your own and restarting with something pushing alongside you.
Restart with the site already in order
You do not need to redo everything. You need half a day of checks done properly, before September traffic arrives and not after. If you would rather we did them, see what our website design service covers or book a free consultation: we look at your site together and tell you what is worth fixing now and what can wait.
